Short   Sorry!
In Dutch, people only use the English word 'sorry' when they know they made a mistake and are willing to admit that. I'm always a little puzzled when English-speakers say sorry when they notice I'm not well or unhappy about something and I feel like saying "it's not your fault."
Instead you can say:
Het spijt me click to hear 2 3 I'm sorry
't Spijt me heel erg click to hear 2 3 I'm very sorry, I'm really sorry
't Spijt me, ik ben Uw naam vergeten click to hear 2 I'm sorry, I forgot your name
't Spijt me, 't eten is aangebrand click to hear 2 3 I'm sorry, the food is burned
to express sympathy:
Wat jammer dat je fiets gestolen is! click to hear 2 3 4 I'm sorry your bike was stolen, Such a pity that your bike was stolen (I feel your pain)
Wat jammer nou! click to hear 2 3 Such a pity! (I feel your pain)
Wat jammer! click to hear Such a pity! (disappointment)
Wat jammer nou van die ijskast click to hear What a pity of that fridge! (annoyed at the background noise)
Not as strong:
Wat vervelend! click to hear How unpleasant! Such a nuisance!
Wat vervelend nou! click to hear 2 3 How unpleasant! [now] Such a nuisance!
Je fiets is helaas gestolen click to hear 2 3 I'm sorry, your bike was stolen (unfortunately I have bad news for you)
Wat lastig! click to hear 2 Such a hassle! (When something is complicated)
