Adverbs modify verbs: the day was long
Adjectives modify nouns: the long day
The colors are usually found as adverbs and adjectives. Dutch adverbs are in the root form of the word (what you find in the dictionary) - Dutch adjectives in most positions get an -E ending, only not when they're with with singular 'het'-words after 'een,'   'geen'  or no article. Adjectives already ending in -E don't add an extra E.
