Short    Word Order, Sentence Building 9: The Indirect Object
Read and listen to the examples below to memorize the patterns There are actually two kinds of objects: the most common, the one mentioned before, is more properly called the 'direct object' in English, and in Dutch (often fittingly) lijdend voorwerp ('suffering entity/item') — The second class of objects is called the 'indirect object' in English, and meewerkend voorwerp ('cooperating entity/item') in Dutch. It's usually found in sentences with verbs like 'to give' (geven 2), 'to say' (zeggen ) and 'to tell' (vertellen ), that describe someone receiving something. Its usual position is right after the verb, before the direct object.  subject   verb   indirect object   direct object  Jan geeft Piet een boek. Jan gives Piet a book. Ik geef Marietje bloemen. I'm giving Marietje flowers. You may find the indirect object preceded by prepositions like aan - 'to' or 'for' - but then both Dutch and English place it after the direct object.
