Short    Building Sentences 18, Word Order – Advanced: Sentences Starting with a Condition
Read and listen to the examples below to memorize the patterns A sentence can start with a 'condition' and after that, like with time or place, the verb comes before the subject  condition   working verb   subject ...     ... (time)   (place)   (object)   (complement)   (other verbs)  Door de tegenwind kwamen we maar met moeite vooruit Because of the [wind-against] headwind we only moved forward, progressed [with difficulty] slowly Behalve z'n neus lijkt hij op z'n oma Except for his nose he looks like his grandmother Toen de oorlog begon was m'n vader tweeëndertig When the war started, my Dad was 32 Some Condition Words: als ('if, when') - omdat ('because') - wanneer ('when' - condition) - toen 2 ('when' - time) - waar ('where') - hoe ('how') - wie 2 ('who') - wat ('what') - tenzij 2 ('unless') - alsof ('as if') When the 'condition' is a more complicated sub-sentence with an object and/or a complement, those are placed between the subject and the working verb  condition word   subject   (complement)   (object)   working verb   ...  Je bent druk 2 You're busy Als je druk bent ... 2 If you're busy ... Het licht wordt groen. 2 The light is turning green. Als het licht rood is moet je stoppen. 2 When the light is red you have to stop. Als het licht rood wordt moet je stoppen. 2 When the light turns red you have to stop. Als het licht groen is mag je doorrijden. 2 When the light is green you may drive on. Toen het licht groen werd reden we weg. 2 When the light turned green we drove off. Sometimes you can make your Dutch life easier by just using an 'and' sentence. Het licht werd groen en we reden weg. 2 The light turned green and we drove off.
