'Units' - Partitive Words - Deelaanduidende Woorden and Other Common Word Combinations
Graham Weir tells me these words are called 'partitives' and
'partitive phrases.' My dictionary translates that as
'deelaanduidend woord.'23 - English Club
Note that Dutch doesn't use something like 'of' that you usually see
with English units - Dutch only says van2 when stating the
material/what something is made of, for instance in
hoedje van papier ('hat of paper, paper hat')
But Dutch uses van when you're not talking about units but
about a part of a
clearly defined whole, like 'half of the population' -
de helft van de bevolking
or 'two years of my life' -
twee jaar van m'n leven2
- you could say it's actually a regular possessive 'of/van' there.
