The wooded area North of a line between Arnhem and Wageningen is called the 'Veluwe,' the area between the rivers Rhine, Waal and Maas West of a line between Arnhem and Nijmegen is called the 'Betuwe.' The 'Betuwe' was the heartland of the Germanic tribe of the Batavians, who settled there about 2300 years ago. 'Betuwe' probably means 'good soil,' and 'Veluwe' is probably 'poor soil.'
