In the examples above it may be all right in English to just say 'never' without 'yet' or 'before,' but leaving out 'nog' in Dutch looks bare, poor - like English doesn't use an equivalent of 'nog' in many of the series of examples below, but in Dutch that wouldn't look good.

The soundalike, somewhat old-fashioned 'noch' is like 'nor' in English 'neither ... nor.' Dutch usually leaves out the 'neither.' It's mostly found in sayings.

The Dutch adjective and adverb stil 2 (stil/stille 2) means 'quiet, no sound.' Originally it probably had a wider meaning, like English 'still' - no movement, which is still found in many Dutch compound words and expressions with 'stil.' It is in the same range of meaning.
